House D is in the 18th district of Vienna. A wine-growing area with a rural character on the outskirts of the metropolis Vienna. The neighbouring buildings have historic value as they were home to Ludwig van Beethoven, the famous author Grillparzer and home to the former chancellor, Bruno Kreisky.

The task was to create contemporary modern single- family house while integrating and preserving the historical protected winegrower's house. So, the building site was reduced to the area behind the existing buildings oriented to the street and between the walls of the neighboring buildings.

We decided to have a modern lavish building oriented to the garden behind the historic buildings.

The constraints of the plot led us to create a courtyard in the middle the building to bring in light and visually connect the 4 floors.

The roof and the courtyard are combined and form a sculpture. Reflective and movable panels direct daylight into the interior spaces and the floors below ground level.
